Same Barn, Clearer Words: What Changed in HorseBook 1.1.40
HorseBook 1.1.40 and the web app now use one name for each thing, the same on iPhone, iPad and the web. Medical is Health, Say What You Did is Quick Entry, Pregnant is In foal, Deals are Bookings, Smart Upload is Scan. A few old screens are gone, and the app runs full screen on iPad.
By Brian Bickell, who raises paint and quarter horses at Bickell Ranches in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
This update changes very little about what HorseBook does and a lot about what things are called. As HorseBook grew, it picked up more than one name for the same thing. The iPhone said Medical where the web said Medical Records, a breeding was a cover in one place and a breeding in the next, and the same list of bookings was Deals on one screen and the season book on another. If you used both the phone and the web, you had to learn both sets of words.
From 1.1.40 on, the menus, page titles and back buttons use one name for each thing, and it's the same on iPhone, iPad and the web. A few labels inside screens still use older words. The help pages use the same words, so what you read there matches what's on your screen.
The iPhone and iPad update is 1.1.40 in the App Store. The web changed the same day.
What's called what now
Your records haven't moved. Each one is where it was, under a clearer name.
| It used to say | Now it says | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Medical, Medical Records | Health | A horse's page and its link on the web; the tile on iPhone and iPad |
| Medical Record | health record, Add a health record | Forms, lists, scan results |
| Say What You Did | Quick Entry | The Add menu on iPhone and iPad; the Quick Entry card on Today on the web |
| Pregnant | In foal | Broodmares, a mare's breeding status, the group filter |
| Broodmare Board | Broodmares | Both clients |
| Record a Cover, Edit Cover | Record a breeding, Edit breeding, Breeding history | A mare's Breeding page, the Add menu, Quick Entry. Live cover stays a method |
| Cover date | Breeding date | The breeding form and its details |
| Cycle Details, Cycle Check | Heat cycle | A mare's Breeding page |
| Deals | Bookings | The web sidebar and page title; the iPhone and iPad app |
| Season book; Stallions & season book | Bookings (the stallion's link); Stallions | The stallion's horse page; the stallion list |
| Smart Upload, Import with AI, Scan Documents | Scan; Scan a paper on Today | The web sidebar and page title; the iPhone and iPad Scan screen |
| Reports, Report / Export | Herd report (the whole herd); Horse report (one horse) | Both clients |
| Account (in iPhone Settings) | Profile | Settings on iPhone and iPad. Delete Account is still on that screen |
| Events | Reminders | Delete and merge messages, team activity, the iPhone home-screen widget |
| Withdrawn (a statement) | Void | Statements, on both clients and on the owner's link |
| Owned, Client horses (the herd list's filter) | Yours, Clients' | The Horses list and saved groups. A horse's own ownership field is unchanged |
The web addresses follow the names. /app/dashboard is now /app/today, /app/business/deals is now /app/business/bookings, and a stallion's breeding report now sits under that stallion. Old bookmarks and links still work and take you to the new page.
What's gone, and where to find it now
We removed a few screens that repeated something you can find elsewhere.
- Mare compatibility is gone from the stallion page, on iPhone and the web. We didn't delete the notes you saved there. If you want a copy, email support@horsebook.app.
- The second stallion book on the web. A stallion's horse record had its own Breeding page with season money, a program summary, a freezing log, collections and mare bookings, all of which the stallion page under Business → Stallions also has. That copy is gone. The horse record keeps his breeding history, his foals, and a card that opens his Bookings.
- This month's expenses on Today (web). Everything it showed is on Expenses.
- Season contract defaults are changed on the web. On iPhone and iPad you can still see a stallion's season defaults, and a new contract starts from them; what you change on that contract is for that contract only. Changing the defaults themselves is on the web, where the rest of contract setup lives. Making, sending, signing and voiding a contract work on the phone as before.
- The old sign-up questionnaires. A new account now goes through one short first session on every client: one question, your first horse (or your mares), and what HorseBook will remind you about. If you already have an account, nothing changes for you.
- Extra Import your herd buttons. Importing a whole herd starts from Horses or the Add menu (or the first session, for a new account). The buttons in Settings are gone.
iPad now runs full screen
Until now, HorseBook on an iPad was the iPhone app in a phone-sized window. From 1.1.40 it's a real iPad app:
- It runs full screen, in portrait and landscape.
- Each screen's content sits in one readable column down the middle, under a full-width top bar.
- In Split View, Slide Over or a small Stage Manager window, it switches to the iPhone layout.
- Most confirmations point at the button you tapped, and messages that used to say "this iPhone" now say "this iPad".
It's the same app with the same account and the same records, so there's nothing new to learn, just more room to work in. The few desk jobs that live on the web, like setting up your own contract, work in Safari on the iPad too.
Fixes in this update
- Deleting a document on iPhone now removes its file from storage too, the same as on the web.
- Upload signed copy → Choose file on a booking's contract opens the Files picker again.
- A scan started from Siri, or from a HorseBook notification that opens the scanner, lands on Scan, including when the app wasn't already running.
- On iPhone, a link in an email or notification to Expenses, Contacts, Documents, Locations, Herd report or Settings now opens that screen, not just the Farm tab.

Frequently asked questions
Where did Medical records go in HorseBook?
Nowhere. They are the same records under a new name: a horse's Medical page is now its Health page, on iPhone, iPad and the web, and a medical record is now a health record. Nothing was moved or deleted.
What happened to Say What You Did?
It is called Quick Entry now, on every client. On iPhone and iPad it is Quick Entry in the Add menu; on the web it is the Quick Entry card on Today, or Quick Entry in the + Add menu. It works the same way and keeps its own monthly allowance.
Does HorseBook work on iPad?
Yes. From version 1.1.40 the app runs full screen on iPad, in portrait or landscape, with the same screens and features as on iPhone. In Split View or a small window it uses the iPhone layout.
What happened to mare compatibility notes?
The mare compatibility screen was removed from the stallion page on iPhone and the web in 1.1.40. Notes saved there were not deleted. If you want a copy, email support@horsebook.app.
Do my old HorseBook links and bookmarks still work?
Yes. A bookmark to the old dashboard opens Today, a link to a deal opens the same booking under Bookings, and a link to a stallion breeding report opens it in its new place under that stallion.
