The story
Brian Bickell is a software developer on a ranch outside Stillwater, Oklahoma. His wife Ashley runs their boutique Paint and Quarter Horse breeding operation, Bickell Ranches, and for years she was drowning in barn paperwork — Coggins tests, registration papers, vet invoices, foaling dates, all of it scattered across folders, glove boxes, and the kitchen counter.
So Brian built the thing she needed. HorseBook keeps a barn’s records, dates, and documents in one place, and its scanner does the part nobody wants to do by hand: point a phone at a vet bill or a registration paper and it reads the details into a record you can check and keep. The demo you’ll see in the app is built on their own horses — the hero is Bosalito, their real APHA reserve world champion breeding stallion. His actual papers, vet records, and stallion-services invoices are what the scanner reads in the screenshots.
"I'm the software guy who married into horses. Ashley's the horse person, and she keeps me honest," Brian says. "I didn't set out to build a company — I set out to get my wife's barn paperwork off the kitchen counter. Turns out a lot of folks have the same shoebox full of papers." HorseBook has been live on the App Store and the web since March 2026.
